Briefing about a ropeway project in Kota Kinabalu

The state government of Kota Kinabalu (City of Malaysia) is currently in talks with a Korean company to connect the city with the Island Pulau Gaya by ropeway. For Prime Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Shafie Apdal, this development is necessary to bring more tourists to the island and thereby boost the economy.

The plans for the construction of a connecting bridge were quickly discarded because the traffic would increase drastically and thus strong environmental impact on the island would be expected.

In contrast, the ropeway offers an environmentally friendly solution with high transport capacity. So far, two talks have been held on this project between the company and the state government. Further negotiations on the best possible implementation should follow soon.
