Underground cableway to connect the town with mountain ploses

“A Town – Mountain Connection”: with this simple title the South-Tyrolean municipality of Brixen introduced its project for an urban cableway to connect the center of this town of 20,000 to the nearby mountain Plose. It should run underground.

According to the “Südtirol News”, the cableway’s route will lead underground from the bus station to the Max carpark, from there it will contin- ue above ground to the bottom station of the already existing Plose cable car. The new monocable installation will stop at six stations and should cost 50 million euros.

According to the “Südtirol News”, the cableway’s route will lead underground from the bus station to the Max carpark, from there it will continue above ground to the bottom station of the already existing Plose cable car. The new mono-cable installation will stop at six stations and should cost 50 million euros. On the basis of proposals submitted in a Europe-wide contest, the winner was selected in 2018 by a jury consisting of experts and public servants.

The specialist jury agreed unanimously that the proposal submitted by the planning team Valdemarin / Röck / Bergmeister & Wolf was the best. It convinced both with its overall conept and the individual criteria.

These criteria were developed by a working group in dialogue with residents and approved by the municipal council as a basis for decision-making. The jury appreciated especially the good transport connection between various hubs proposed by the winning project: the bus station near the old town, the railway station and an important change- over point, Milland. Such connection will prevent the increase of individual traffic in the city center.

The proposal also scored with its attractiveness to various user groups, door-to-door travel time, frequency and capacity. What was also appreciated was the fact that, thanks to the innovative approach, a certain complexity was achieved, although this was the case also with the other projects that ranked high in the tender.

Finally, the winning solution scored high thanks to non-burdensome operation, low emissions, as well as the cableway’s experiential value. The town of Brixen will now thoroughly examine the project and commission the preparation of a detailed project based on the concept. ts
